Upon learning that I had been unwell, an older neighbour of mine, whom I know very little, cut some azaleas from her backyard and gave them to Jon so I’d have flowers when I’d get home. We had only spoken twice prior to that, and I am speechless at the kindness of strangers.
The book is Watling Street by the brilliant @john.higgs, an exploration of Britain (and of the British psyche, aka “why everybody dislikes Milton Keynes”) through the physical reminders of its past. I have only started reading it, but it has been very good so far. Now that I am looking into writing a little more seriously, I think it is nice to have some good examples in mind.
Oh, and also, wild raspberries from my dad’s garden. They’re delicious.

Monument for a Wullok by Stief DeSmet, Beaufort 2018 (Ostend) | Every whelk (or, as it is pronounced in West Flanders, ‘wullok’) is a work of perfection. These shells grow in accordance with the rules of the Golden Section or the Fibonacci number series, which means that each part of the shell is in perfect proportion to every other part. Forged with the secret logic of the sea, there is in every whelk, regardless of size, a flawlessly balanced proportion between its beginning and endpoint.
I am particularly happy with this picture because there were many people on the pier and it really was a matter of split seconds to manage to take it without anyone on the foreground or background.
